There are two campuses in Umeå. The main campus and focal centre of Umeå University is situated near the University hospital. This is where most courses and programmes are held and where you find the University Library, administration, restaurants, cafés and Europe’s largest sports and fitness training centre, Iksu Sport.
Umeå Arts Campus is situated on the east side of town by the scenic banks of the Umeå River and is within short walking distance of Campus Umeå. It hosts the Umeå Institute of Design, Umeå Academy of Fine Arts and new Umeå School of Architecture. HUMlab-X also has been given a place at this new ”artistic campus” along with Bildmuseet, Umeå University’s museum of contemporary art and visual culture.
The Faculty of Science and Technology offers 25 Bachelor’s programs of which one is at present given in English and 14 Master’s programs entirely in English. Students who do not intend to study a whole program can apply for single courses at all leves.
Proximity to research, excellent teaching and a relaxed atmosphere characterize the faculty’s education. The world class achievements at our research centers with staff from various nationalities and the connection with industry lead to interdisciplinary and international approach also in our academic programs.
Umeå University has designated 14 strong research environments. The Faculty of Science and Technology hosts seven of these. Our scientists work in a wide range of areas from chemistry, biology and computing science to mathematics, physics, design and arcitecture. Their research spans from basic science to applied sciences, where they deal with questions related to protein functions as well as in technology involved in designing autonomous intelligent off-road forest cutting vehicles operated without human drivers.
Multidisciplinary research in an international atmosphere is carried out at the The Chemical Biological Centre where scientists from both Umeå University and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) collaborate in cutting edge projects.
Umeå is Northern Sweden’s largest city. It is a clean and green city where people and businesses respect the beautiful northern landscape and really care about protecting the environment. Active leasure time is important in Umeå, where students can work out at Europe’s largest sports centre and surrounding nature is easily accessible by bike.
The city’s green credentials are underlined by the fact Umeå is known as the “City of Birches”. Almost 3 000 birch trees were planted along the city’s wide avenues following a devastating fire that destroyed large parts of the city in 1888.
As one of the fastest growing cities in Sweden, Umeå successfully manages to balance its environmental commitments with its trade and industry ambitions, attracting some of the world’s most creative and enterprising businesses to the region. The city has tremendous IT know-how and IT and communications industries are particularly well established here.
