Indian police get training in soft skills
Delhi Police have undergone new training in soft skills. Taking a step forward, Delhi Police Southeast district launched soft skills training for its police officers.
Police need soft skills every day
Mentioning a focus on public interaction as a vital part of modern day policing, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Chinmoy Biswal, launched a two-day soft skill training programme in the Southeast district of Delhi.
According to DCP Biswal, on duty officers are not only expected to serve and protect but also use many soft skills such as communication, active listening, problem-solving and leadership.
“Besides, the beat officers interact with the various strata of the society to draw out the information of crime and criminals and to resolve the grievances of general public. All these duties of police officers require sound level of communication and behavioural skills,” he said.
Soft skills essential to police force
Emphasising the importance of a development of soft skills among the police force, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that human and behavioural psychology should be vital parts of police training. He he called for a qualitative change in the force and said the development of soft skills was now essential and should become a part of the training drill.
“Technology and human interface are both important for the police force to keep progressing,” he said. Noting that the annual conference has “undergone a transformation in the way it is conducted”, Modi said it had become a platform for sharing experiences which leads to good inputs for policy planning.
As of 10 November, 2018 52 Indian police officers have undergone new soft skills training.
