You want to come up with a successful online marketing strategy? Then don’t miss the so called Search Engine Marketing (SEM). This is a term that refers to increasing your web presence through the use of keywords and searchability. In return, one of the most important types of SEM is the Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Why don’t we have a closer look at this special type of keyword marketing?!

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

SEO is the most cost effective and preferred way to increase your presence on the web. The reason SEO is so preferred is that it costs virtually nothing to perform. Unlike paid advertising, you are optimizing the content and searchability of your website or social media outlet profile to get prospective customers to find you. The most important and basic components to SEO in your Internet marketing strategy are keywords and keyword phrases. These are the backbone of SEO.

Keyword and keyword phrases

What exactly are keywords? A keyword is a search term that a user might type into a search engine to find a website. For example, if you sell weight loss supplements, some of your keywords could include: weight loss, lose weight or diet pills. What you want to keep in mind is that you can never have too many keywords as long as they are relevant to your company and the product you are trying to sell.

Determining your keywords

First, you are going to want to think of the most obvious keywords that people will type into a search engine. Try to expand them into longer phrases or keywords you may not necessarily think of first. Another helpful tip is to pluralize keywords that you have already come up with.

Another tip is to use a keyword generating resource to come up with even more keywords. These include: Google Adwords, Micro Niche Finder, Wordtracker and Wordstream Keyword Analyzer. By using these resources you will gain certain information about the keywords such as: The rate of competition for showing up in the results when someone searches with that keyword or the number of global monthly searches that are made using that keyword.

Placing your keywords

When placing your keywords it is important to focus on both On Page and Off Page types of SEO.

  • On Page: This refers to SEO that is used within your company’s website.  This type of SEO uses keywords to help improve its ranking within search engines. Keywords are placed strategically in different spots, like your content or your web pages’ titles. SEO of this type is important because it gets people to come directly to your site.
  • Off Page: This refers to SEO that is strategically placed outside of the company’s website. This could include social media outlets, blog posts, written articles, etc. Backlinks are what make up this type of SEO, and this is highly considered the most important kind of SEO. SEO of this type if important as well because it gets people to find your site through multiple outlets.
