Mindfulness is not about zoning out, but zooming in – it’s paying attention in the present moment and decluttering the brain to make room for creativity– and in business that can mean boosting the bottom line.

In this blog in the series, ‘What Can Mindfulness Do For Me’ we ask, ‘Why is Mindfulness being called the new secret weapon for business?’

Before you start reading, do you know what mindfulness is?

1. Secret business Mondays

Mindful business drop-ins are a new global phenomenon and they can be found everywhere – from New York to London, from Paris to Mumbai – and they usually happen on a Monday.

But why has mindfulness achieved cult like status in the hard-nosed business world, with CEO’s from all sectors calling it their new secret weapon; giving both them and their companies added potency and greater oomph!

2. Boosting the bottom line

One multi-national company has reported +147% higher earnings per share following the introduction of an in-house mindfulness programme.

Another multi-national insurance company found that 88% of employees who attended a mindfulness programme, reported improvements in their concentration, creativity and ability to handle increased workloads.

Whilst a UK transport company benefitted from a 71% fall in days taken for anxiety, stress and depression, following a 12 week Mindfulness programme for staff.

3. A big iceberg

ts though are just the tip of a pretty mighty iceberg and are manna from heaven for hard-pressed businesses who recognise that a high stress and non-supportive working environment can have a highly toxic impact; and not just on performance and productivity, but on labour costs as well.

And in more general terms following the introduction of a mindfulness programme in the workplace, we are talking about net dividends like:

  • Lower turnover rates
  • Greater employee engagement and enhanced employer/employee relationships
  • Increased mental and physical resilience
  • Greater tolerance and less workplace conflict
  • Marked reductions in overall stress and feeling overwhelmed by demanding deadlines
  • A greater sense of purpose, clarity and improved decision making

4. How it works

Mindfulness is not about zoning out, but zooming in – it’s paying attention in the present moment and decluttering the brain to make room for creativity– and in business that can mean boosting the bottom line.

It works by making things better from the inside out, because it puts the heart back into the workplace. It gets people talking about stuff that is human and relatable.

Perhaps that’s why Hedge Funds and Banks, Public Transport companies, Distillers, Insurance companies, Sports Wear retailers and High-Tech, Online & Social Media companies like Adobe, Apple, Facebook, eBay, LinkedIn and Twitter, are all embracing it.
