Performance appraisal is regarded as a challenging part of any manager’s job. Both managers and employees often feel the discomfort created by a poorly handled appraisal. In this episode, the author examines the three key steps of the process and explores reasons why the process is ineffective such as poor preparation, unclear objectives, and rater bias. By recognizing the importance of the developmental component of each appraisal and better communication managers, employees, and organizations can receive more benefit from this process.

About the Author

Jeff Hefel is a retired Professor of Management from Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota. Over 35 years, he taught courses in management, marketing, and economics. He holds an MBA and has provided professional consultations and workshops to many local businesses in Strategic Planning, and Human Resource Management. He received the University’s Outstanding Professor award in 1999.
