No one likes to struggle; especially with it comes to our careers. In fact, all of us want to feel as successful as possible in just about everything we do. But what happens when performance falls short of expectations? Performance issues in the workplace are never easy to address. How do you know that someone isn’t just having a series of bad days? Do they have a poor work ethic, or did something change that is making work more difficult? Most of us need a little help sooner or later but asking for help and knowing how to help are both difficult tasks. Part of the issue is just understanding why there is a struggle in the first place before you can help someone course correct. Most of us become a hammer or a coddler when we are confronted with a struggling employee, but what we really need to do is develop the coaching skills necessary to rescue what may otherwise be a good member of the team. Once we begin to understand that it’s about the performance and not the character, we can develop a good plan to help underperforming employees.
