Managing teams at Microsoft is not so much about managing, but more about assembling a group of vendors. Managing would put the responsibility on the manager to manage all these people. And it stops being about the individual and starts focusing on how to leverage each digital unit as a whole. Asking the question: “What are we trying to do?” Usually, something daunting and scary. We need to communicate a convincing argument. If you hire really motivated people, it doesn’t matter what skill sets you need to learn, they will learn.
